Deploying seismic gear while the Soviets look on from their spy ship just off the stern of the Hayes. Their presence caused us a lot of problems with deploying gear. After they finally left us along, we were able to resume surveying. Unfortunately for them, they decided to follow us with a submarine. Big mistake! The airgun went off about 2 or 3 times and then a Bathoom-a-chung. We retrieved the airgun and it was damaged. It had gone off against the hull of a submarine. It surfaced and sent threatening messages and the USSR going to sue us for damaging their sonarmens' eardrums. I never was able to get a photo of the sub and mainly heard about it via the Senior Scientist.

This is a large Soviet spy ship, the Zaporoshde. Given its configuration it is likely a SIGINT ship for gathering signals intellegence. It dogged us for about a week before the figured out we were actually doing pure research and not tracking submarines or laying down sensor arrays.

This is a closeup of the USSR ship Zaporoshde. They came very close to us on several occasions and created a collision hazard. They were bound and determined to prevent us from laying down any kind of array to track their subs.
